Skin Benefits of the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon, a haven for relaxation, rejuvenation, and endless skin benefits is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland. The man-made geothermal spa has an abundance of silica, which is what drew people to bathe in the water in the first place.

What’s in the Water?

So what exactly is in the water? What makes it so special? Well, the answer to that is three main active ingredients; Silica, Algae, and Minerals. These are what make it so great for your skin, but not so great for your hair.

Another fun fact about the water is it is renewed every 40 hours, which means it is always clean!

What Do You Put on Your Skin?

There are three things you are able to put on your skin while visiting the Blue Lagoon; the Lava Scrub, Silica Mud Mask, and an Algae Mask. If you decide to do all three, there is an order you must follow.

  1. The Lava Scrub – start by exfoliating your skin with the wonderful lava scrub. This will renew your skin, leaving it smooth and ready for the next treatment.
  2. Silica Mud Mask – This is what draws everybody to the Blue Lagoon. It is a thick white substance that you can slather on your face and body. Silica is known to cleanse your skin while also strengthening it. This mask should be left on for 10 minutes.
  3. Algae Mask – This mask is made from algae found within the Blue Lagoon, and is known for its anti-aging benefits. It will leave your skin looking and feeling years younger. This should be used as the last step and left on the skin for 10 minutes.

How Do You Get the Products?

Both the Silica Mud Mask and the Algae Mask can be obtained by swimming up to the mud mask bar. The silica is available for anyone to use free of charge. You are also able to take as much as you want. The algae mask is not free of charge; it is $4, and well worth it. If you decide you would like to use this mask, just swim up the bar, scan your bracelet, and you will be given a scoop of the green mask.

The lava scrub is a little harder to come by. You do not swim up to a bar to get this; there is a Blue Lagoon worker that swims around the pool to give the scrub to people. You do not need to do this because it is hard to spot her, but if you do decide you want the scrub, it must be applied before the other 2 masks.
